Inspiration for this project was first conceived through researching a technique called Mokume-gane. This is a traditional Japanese metal work method which mimics the pattern of wood grain by layering and crimping different colored metal. Upon witnessing the outcome, the viewer associates a molded piece of metal with wood. I have taken this technique outside of the realm of metal work, and adopted it with other materials. I have created collages following the steps of Mokume-gane, photographed them from 8 different angles, and uploaded them on to image search engine; consequently creating a list of keywords associated with the images through algorithm. We have always been familiar with the structure of the word and image as a pair, such as a method to learn new things or from being on social media. When algorithm and artificial intelligence intervene on our process of piecing these two elements together, does it effect the way we see images altogether? Will we blindly trust the high accuracy of our search results? Or perhaps can we accept our differences, and find clues to develop a new way of seeing?
The title PRESS denotes not only physical pressure, but also mental pressure. In context of this project the word indicates both method of craft, and the changes we face by the rise of artificial intelligence.
