Never want to do this again is inspired by notices commonly seen in exhibition spaces.
The MDF bases were painted multiple times with acrylic gouache and sanded smooth after each layer dried.
The black letters on top were meticulously hand-cut from sterling silver plates and oxidised to achieve a blackened finish.
Compared to other works I created during the same period, this series involved the use of the most expensive materials and the most labour-intensive processes. However, during the exhibition, many visitors did not recognise these pieces as artworks. This series reflects on whether the value of materials and the artist’s labour can turn something functional into something regarded as art, and explores how textual information commonly encountered in exhibition spaces can be reimagined as artwork.
