Object Lesson, a series of works based on pairs of images and words that I have been working on since 2018, was inspired by René Magritte’s painting The Treachery of Images and Michel Foucault’s book This is Not a Pipe, which focuses on the painting.

From this series emerged The Exchange Example.

Exhibition spaces for artworks can be considered as spaces composed of both images and words. Within these spaces, textual information is often positioned in a way that seems to slip into the territory of the artwork itself. What happens to the hierarchy between the two when textual information is considered as 'images of words' — created by the same hand, with the same (or perhaps even more) time and effort as the artwork?

The Exchange Example is an attempt to blur the boundaries and relationships between the two, rather than having the text 'serves to support' the image.
